Hospice of South Texas has once again scored Medicare’s highest 5-Star rating in a recent quality of care survey. They are the only local hospice to achieve a 5-Star rating. The survey was published by the U.S Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) who established a star ratings system for hospice organizations across the nation. CMS posts star ratings for hospices on its Care Compare website allowing consumers to discover quality care statistics on hospice providers. The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey results are currently the key indicator of those ratings.

CAHPS survey ratings are among the most important sources of hospice quality data. CMS requires that hospices send the survey to families following a patient’s death to gauge their satisfaction with the services they’ve received, which the agency uses to determine a provider’s star rating.

The Family Caregiver Survey asks family members or friends about the patient’s hospice care, and if they would recommend that hospice to someone else. The survey ratings can be used to compare hospices using a 5-star scale, with more stars indicating better quality care. Hospice of South Texas scored above the national average in all survey categories including:

  • family communication
  • response time
  • treating patients with respect
  • emotional and spiritual support
  • help for pain and symptoms
  • training family caregivers
  • overall rating
  • willingness to recommend

This survey demonstrates both the quality of the expert care Hospice of South Texas provides and the compassion, respect and value delivered. Families surveyed felt that Hospice of South Texas always listened carefully, kept families well informed and always gave patients and families help when they needed it.

“The survey really focuses on what we understand matters most to families. Beyond providing the highest quality of care, we provide real support at a difficult time. We focus on improving quality of life as we strive to communicate and respond. We know what these families are going through and as our mission says, we’ll be there with love, comfort and support,” said Michael Chavez, Hospice of South Texas Chief Executive Officer.
